Natural Anodizing Science: Technical Whitepaper Insight

Natural Anodizing (often called clear anodizing) is an electrochemical passivation process that alters the surface chemistry of aluminum alloys. By placing the aluminum components in an acid electrolyte bath (typically sulfuric acid, H2SO4) and running an electric current, oxygen ions are released from the electrolyte to fuse with aluminum atoms, producing a highly ordered, microscopic layer of Aluminum Oxide (Al2O3).

Unlike painting or electroplating, which adds a topical layer that can peel or chip, natural anodizing integrates directly with the underlying aluminum substrate. This yields a highly durable finish that is completely non-reactive, preserves the natural metallic silver luster, and offers superior hardness (up to 300 HV for standard Type II anodizing, and even higher for Type III hardcoat anodizing).
